Welcome to Seventh Grade
Please congratulate Mariah Haubrich AGAIN!
This time she captured third place in the Sparta Public Library Poetry Contest.
Considering there were 796 poems received, this is truly an accomplishment. Her
poem follows:
MY ART ROOM
By Mariah Haubrich
Paints and markers fill every drawer,
My art hangs outside the door.
Sculptures fill countertop space,
The top of my desk is dressed with lace.
Too many bins full of pencils,
Decorated walls covered with stencils.
In the kiln, pottery is baking,
Other projects near are still in the making.
A self-portrait is hung over my bed,
Beautiful roses are painted in red.
Paint easels on every side,
Bookshelves full of old art guides.
A half woven blanket is on the loom,
This is the beauty of my art room.
Mariah's Award winning poem:
A WINTER DAY
By Mariah Haubrich
The snow lies as a glistening blanket of white,
Lit up by the moon on a blustery winter night.
Firewood burns from sunup to sundown,
The lovely aroma fills the silent, snow-covered town.
Children come out once it's dawn,
Snowmen are built on every lawn.
The howling wind blows through the trees,
The fluffy snow is piled up to my knees.
The frigid air stings my nose,
I feel the wet snow around my toes.
Snow angels rest gracefully outside of my house,
Across my porch, there are small tracks of a mouse.
In the field, a snow-covered bunny hops,
Icicles dangle from my neighbors' rooftops.
Watching the wood crackle like electricity in a wire,
I am warmed by the heat of a burning campfire.
Everything is finally going my way,
Just dreaming of this great winter day.
The seventh grade had a special guest visit from Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs. Dog handlers, Kyra Wright and Lorraine Ernst presented the students with a very informative session on how one might train a dog for pet therapy. Their accompanying dogs Jethro, a 180 pound Leonburger, and Ranger, a standard black poodle provided hands-on demonstrations of therapy dog behaviors. Thanks to Kyra, Lorraine, Jethro and Ranger, the seventh graders have a better understanding of the important community service that therapy dogs and their handlers provide.

It is preferred that logs are typed, double-spaced and are between 11/2 and 3 pages in length. If handwritten, neatest handwriting and equivalent appropriate length are expected.

The following selections are used in our literature study. We analyze the literature through literary elements such as plot sequence, characterization, author’s purpose and style. The students develop articulation of their thoughts in oral and written form. We also define the vocabulary in context of our reading. The variety and frequency of reading selections increases reading exposure and strengthens reading skills. Therefore, students are always encouraged to read independently in addition to the curriculum selections.
